Memorial services for slain marine biologist Dr. Kent E. Carpenter will be held at the Udarbe Chapel of Silliman University (SU) in Dumaguete City from Monday to Wednesday, July 20 to 22.
SU announced that the services will run daily from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
This will provide an opportunity for colleagues, friends, members of the scientific community, local government officials from the Negros Island–Siquijor Region, and the public to pay their respects and celebrate Carpenter’s life and enduring contributions to marine science, biodiversity conservation, and environmental research, SU said.
Representatives from academic and government institutions in Manila and other regions are also expected to attend to express their condolences and honor his remarkable legacy, it said.
“The University community joins the Carpenter family, colleagues, and the wider scientific community in calling for justice and a full, impartial accountability for the tragic circumstances surrounding his death,” SU stated.
Carpenter was a research associate at Silliman.
CHARGES FILED
The police filed charges before the Negros Oriental Prosecutor’s Office on Friday against five suspects in connection with the killing of carpenter at his home in Barangay Ajong, Sibulan, Negros Oriental, on July 12, Capt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, said.
Carpenter sustained two gunshot wounds to the head.
Carpenter’s 34-year-old Filipino live-in partner said she was sexually assaulted during the attack.
She identified the arrested suspects and appeared before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office as the lone eyewitness to the killing.
Four of the suspects are in police detention while a fifth suspect identified as EB of Sibulan is still at large,Polinar said Monday.*
