Dengue death toll in NegOcc now 9

Dengue related deaths in  Negros Occidental have increased to nine, the Provincial Health Office (PHO)  reported on  Thursday, Sept. 5.

The three new deaths were reported amid a rise in dengue cases in Negros Occidental by 214.29 percent compared to last year.

The dengue cases from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31 were 3,234 or 2,205 cases more compared to the same period in 2023 that had 1,029 cases, the PHO report showed

The oldest person hit with dengue was 92 years old.

But the age group with the most number of dengue cases was from 1 to 10 years old, the PHO reported.

The 10 areas with the most number of dengue cases reported are Hinoba-an with 312, followed by Bago City with 274, Sipalay City – 234, Talisay City – 208, Sagay City – 199, San Carlos City – 198, Kabankalan City – 196, Silay City – 186, Cadiz City -179 and Cauayan – 171.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

“Most people who get dengue will not have symptoms. But for those who do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Most will get better in 1–2 weeks,” a World Health Organization advisory said.

“Some people develop severe dengue and need care in a hospital. In severe cases, dengue can be fatal,” it added.
“You can lower your risk of dengue by avoiding mosquito bites, especially during the day, the advisory said.*
