The United Sugar Producers Federation (UNIFED) declared full support to the current leadership of the Department of Agriculture and the Sugar Regulatory Administration amidst challenges of pest infestation, floods, and the impending El Niño.

UNIFED President Manuel Lamata thanked First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos for bringing together sugar industry stakeholders to discuss common goals for the good of the sugar industry, a press release from the federation said Sunday, August 16.

“It is unfortunate that among the federations, UNIFED was the only one present in that meeting but we are hopeful that all stakeholders will heed the First Lady’s call to work together in finding solutions for the RSSI infestation and the effects of El Niño,” Lamata said.

Lamata said politicking should be left on the sidelines. “We stood united in the past when we were faced with various challenges and we can do it again. There must be no room for negativity if we want to survive these crises facing our industry,” he added.

UNIFED said they will continue to cooperate with the SRA and work with various agencies, particularly the Department of Agriculture to ensure that the sugar industry will continue to thrive despite all challenges.*
