The New People’s Army (NPA) claimed responsibility for the burning of heavy equipment used to make a farm-to-market road in Sitio Manghuya, Brgy. Aya, La Libertad, Negros Oriental, on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command-Central Negros Guerilla Front claimed that the project will allow big corporations like mining and other commercial reforestation into the area.
Two backhoes, a payloader, and a dump truck of the Supreme Mega Structure Builders Inc. owned by Lance Limkaichong were torched by the rebels.
Police investigation revealed that Dino Gomez, a watchman in the area, was waylaid by about 30 individuals believed to be NPA members.
Gomez witnessed the burning of the equipment which cost about P5 million.
The NPA rebels fled after they burned the equipment.
Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District), in a statement posted on her Facebook page on Monday, said she strongly condemns the brazen act of violence where a group of approximately 30 heavily armed men set fire to heavy equipment and left behind empty shells of M-16 and AK-47 rifles.
“This deliberate act of violence and destruction is a direct assault on peace, order, and progress in our communities. Such lawlessness has no place in a society that strives for development with peace and security. Those behind this cowardly act must be held accountable,” she said..
She urged law enforcement agencies to expedite their investigation, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they face the full force of the law.
“I also call on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities in bringing forth any information that may aid in resolving this crime,” she said..
“We stand firm against those who seek to sow fear and disorder, and we reaffirm our commitment to upholding peace and protecting the welfare of our people,” she added.*
