National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) officials on Wednesday, Nov. 13, said Negros Island needs more generation plants to ensure power sufficiency.

Neil Martine Modina, NGCP Assistant Vice President and Head of Visayas System Operations, said Negros Island must have baseload generation plants to take over the intermittency of the renewable energy plants and ensure power stability and sufficiency.

Negros Island is producing about 300 megawatts of electricity from its solar power plants, 240MW from geothermal power plants, and about 26MW from diesel power plants, totaling to 540MW, Modina said.

The peak demand of the island is 380MW.

Modina said that Negros Island must study the energy mix, or the types of energy sources to produce electricity, while exploring non-intermittent renewable energy sources.

Cynthia Perez-Alabama, NGCP’s AVP and Public Relations Department Head, also said that the island needs more generation plants as the country’s population drives growth.

“We need to continue building power plants because if the growth of demand exceeds supply, we end up with chronic deficiency and we don’t want that”, Perez-Alabama said.

The Officials of the NGCP were in Bacolod City for a “Power 101” seminar for the media at Fisher Hotel.*
