La Carlota bridge collapses, 1 injured

A steel bridge that was up for demolition collapsed in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, Friday, December 3.*

A worker was injured when a steel bridge up for demolition collapsed in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, at about 2 p.m. Friday, December 3, Mayor Rex Jalando-on said.

Jomer Savilla, 39, of Valenzuela, Metro Manila, sustained head and leg injuries.

The bridge that connects barangays Nagasi and Cubay in La Carlota City had not been used for about 20 years and was being demolished by a contractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways, the mayor said.

There is a concrete bridge that connects the two barangays that is currently in use and another one is under construction, he said.

The old bridge was being demolished so it would not pose a danger, Jalando-on said.

However, it appears that the contractor did not properly implement the demolition, he said.

As they were working on the approach of the bridge, it collapsed causing an employee of the contractor to be injured.*
