Comelec eyeing make-shift polling centers for Kanlaon affected voters

The Commission on Elections will establish make-shift polling centers for residents affected by Kanlaon Volcano if the need arises.

Negros Occidental Provincial Elections Supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria said on Thursday, Jan. 16, that poll preparations for areas near Kanlaon will depend on whether the situation at the volcano worsens.

If classrooms used for voting are being occupied by evacuees they can set up tents as make-shift polling centers for residents in the area, he said.

He also reiterated that polling centers will also be brought to evacuation sites to enable evacuees to vote.

They are currently finalizing their contingency plan with the Department of Education and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of each Kanlaon-affected local government unit, he said.

The Comelec will hold elections in Kanlaon affected areas on May 12 as scheduled to prevent a failure of elections, Regional Election Director Lionel Marco Castillano of the Negros Island Region said earlier.*
