Rep. Mercedes Alvarez (Neg. Occ., 6th District) took her oath as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives before House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
“Just as I was reminiscing about being elected Deputy Speaker ten years ago, I received another unexpected honor last August 3: the trust of my colleagues to once again serve as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,” Alvarez said in a post on her Facebook page.
“I am deeply grateful to my colleagues in the House and to my Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) family for their confidence and support,” she said.
She said she accepts the post with the same commitment “to work, to listen, and to use every opportunity entrusted to me to serve our people well.”
She took her oath wearing a dress crafted from fabric handwoven by the Negros Nine Weavers, “carrying a piece of home, the place I love … the CHICKS Area.”
CHICKS is an acronym for the southern towns and cities that make up the 6th Congressional District of Negros Occidental: Candoni, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Cauayan, Kabankalan City, and Sipalay City.
Alvarez replaced Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan (Ilocos Sur, 2nd District) as House Deputy Speaker.
Rep. Julio Ledesma IV (Neg. Occ., 1st District) was named chair of the Committee on Economic Affairs.
