2 men drown in Himamaylan, Valladolid

Two men died in drowning incidents in Himamaylan City and Valladolid, Negros Occidental, on Wednesday, July 1.

In Himamaylan, a 56-year-old farmer identified as alias “Sixto” was swept away by a strong current while crossing a stream with his wife in Sitio Pangi, Brgy. Carabalan.

Police said the couple was on their way home from the Carabalan Public Market at around 5 p.m. when the woman slipped on the wet concrete pavement due to continuous rainfall.

Sixto attempted to help his wife, but both fell into the stream.

The woman managed to hold on to hanging vines and reach safety, while Sixto was carried away by the current.

His body was recovered at around 8 p.m., about 800 meters downstream from where they fell.

He was brought to the Governor Valeriano M. Gatuslao Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead at around 9 p.m., the police reported.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old fisherman identified as alias “Joy” drowned while bathing in the sea in Brgy. Central Tabao, Valladolid.

Police said Joy told his nephew at around 9 a.m. that he was not feeling well but still went into the water.

A few minutes later, he was found floating and unresponsive.

Bystanders pulled him from the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation before personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office brought him to the Valladolid District Hospital.

He was declared dead by the attending physician at around 10:15 a.m., the police said.*
