Suspension of classes, travel lifted; 16,448 evacuees start going home

The suspension of travel from Negros to Manila was lifted Monday morning, September 26, and classes in 24 Negros Occidental towns and cities are set to resume on Tuesday.

Typhoon “Karding” exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility Monday night.

The Philippine Coast Guard lifted sea travel from Bacolod to Batangas and Manila Monday morning.

Rains brought on by “Karding” caused the evacuation of 4,822 families with 16,448 members in two towns and a city in southern Negros Occidental, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said.

There were 16,091 residents of barangays Gil Montilla, Mambaroto and Maricalum who evacuated, 317 residents of barangays Bagroy, San Teodoro and San Vicente in Binalbagan, and 40 from barangay Caliling and Inayawan in Cauayan.

Zeaphard Caelian, Provincial Disaster Management Program Division head, said many were preemptively evacuated and several had begun returning home.
Damaged by the flooding was the Punta Barasbarasan Dike in Manlucahoc and 62.97 hectares of agriculture land affecting 63 farmers in Sipalay City, Caelian added.

On Monday 24 Negros Occidental LGUs suspended classes, but as of last night many had announced that classes would resume Tuesday.

The 24 LGUs were Murcia, Sipalay, Salvador Benedicto, Hinigaran, Hinoba-an, EB Magalona, Candoni, Kabankalan City, Isabela, La Castellana, Valladolid, Cauayan, Bago City, Moises Padilla, Binalbagan, La Carlota City, Ilog, San Enrique, Himamaylan City, Talisay City, Silay City, Pontevedra, Binabagan and Victorias City.

Victorias City and EB Magalona had also suspended work in government offices on Monday.

EB Magalona announced that work would resume Tuesday.*
