Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) warned on Thursday, Dec. 5, that there are scammers using his name to solicit funds to allegedly aid residents affected by Kanlaon Volcano’s unrest.

Police blotters have been filed and charges will be lodged against the scammers when they are identified, Azcona said at a press conference at the SRA office in Bacolod City.

“There are scammers out there who are using my name and that of SRA to ask for assistance from our suppliers under the guise of helping those that have been affected by the continuing problems brought about by Mt.
Kanlaon,” he said.

“Two suppliers have reported already to us and we’ve reported this to the police,” he said.

He said in the past there have also been similar reports of people using his name to solicit funds.

They have noticed that every time there is an issue in the sugar industry, such scams come up, Azcona said.

Meanwhile, Azcona said as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s request for austerity measures during Christmas celebrations and for the savings to be used to aid calamity victims, SRA has been able to save P700,000.

He said the bulk of the amount will be appropriated to aid residents affected by Kanlaon Volcano, while some will be used to aid those in Cagayan Valley and Batangas affected by recent typhoons.*
