Organic wine maker first Sidlak awardee

The founder of Federico’s Island Organic Wine, Federico Barredo, was named Victorias City’s first-ever Sidlak Awardee during the Sidlak and Malihaw Awards Night, at the City Public Plaza, on Monday, March 20.

Federico’s Island Organic Wine has been called the wonder wine from the Philippines’ sugar capital, Victorias City. It is made from “bignay” or “bugnay”, a Philippine fruit that tastes like cranberry, a press release from the Victorias City government said Wednesday.

The city also recognized this year’s Malihaw awardees, Dr. Ma. Lorline Ortillo for the field of Education, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Nisol for Environment and Agriculture, and Punong Barangay Anna Mae Claro for Public Service, Community Development, and Human and Social Services.

It was the first time that Victorias City launched an awards night during the annual Kadalag-an Festival celebration.

The top 50 taxpayers were also awarded during the event along with special awardees.

The special awardees were Maria Heide Elmission (Entrepreneur of the Year), Sanford Marketing Corporation (Business of the Year), Victorias Milling Company, Inc. (Employer of the Year), Land Bank of the Philippines (Bank of the Year), Triple R Restobar and Sistereet’z Food House (Restaurants of the Year), Mercury Drug and Negros Grace Pharmacy (Outstanding Pharmacies), Colegio De Sta. Ana De Victorias and Don Bosco Technical Institute of Victorias, Inc. (Educational Institutions of the Year), Café Racs (Most Improved Business), and Freemont Foods Corporation (Outstanding Customer Focus).

The Sangguniang Panlungsod awarded Barangay VI-A headed by Punong Barangay Anna Mae Claro as the Best Performing Barangay Council in terms of legislation and gave a P30,000 cash prize and trophy.

They were followed by the runners-up Barangay XVI that received P20,000 cash and a trophy, and Barangay II – P10,000 and a trophy.

Other participating barangays were, Barangay VII, IX, and XIII. They received a certificate, a token of appreciation, and P3,000 each.*
