Negros Electric and Power Corp. has gone on red alert at its Hilangban Substation in Bago City and surrounding facilities following Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption on Monday, Dec. 9.
“Due to the ongoing ash fall, we are implementing measures to prevent damage to our equipment”, Negros Power spokesperson Jonathan Cabrera said.
Ash buildup on electrical equipment can result in a flashover in the event of heavy rain, he said.
“To avoid this risk, we will do periodic flushing or rinsing with strong water in the affected areas and temporarily turn off the power supply,” Canrera said.
He said they first disabled the auto-reclosing function of the affected feeders.
“Our substation teams will coordinate with Systems Operations for the implementation of this flushing process and so that we can issue a Notice of Emergency Power Interruption through the Facebook page of Negros Power, he added.
