Mega Puppets, Electric MassKara ‘to spotlight art, barangay pride’ in Bacolod

Art and community participation will take center stage in two major MassKara Festival 2026 events this month as Mega Puppets and Mega Electric MassKara return to Bacolod.

The Bacolod Gugma Foundation, organizer of MassKara Festival 2026, said Thursday, Oct. 1, that the activities are intended to highlight the festival’s artistic roots and provide platforms for local artists, students, performers and barangays.

The Mega Puppets Competition will be held at Plaza de MassKara at The Upper East on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

This year’s competition carries the theme “Pinoy Icons in Their Winningest Moments: Celebrating Gugma, Sharing Their Smiles.”

Ten groups representing barangays, schools and private institutions will create large-scale puppets inspired by Filipino personalities and moments of achievement.

The competition offers P30,000 for the grand winner, P20,000 for the first runner-up and P10,000 for the second runner-up.

The organizer said the event also draws inspiration from the earlier participation of La Consolacion College Bacolod’s School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Interior Design in MassKara street dance and arena competitions.

Mega Electric MassKara will follow on Oct. 16 at The Upper East.

Seven barangays will participate in the event, which will feature illuminated costumes, floats, music and dance under the theme “Mega Float Festival, Celebrate Barangay Pride.”

The Bacolod Gugma Foundation said both events are part of efforts to reconnect MassKara with its beginnings as an arts-driven festival while giving a new generation of creators and communities space to develop new works.

The events are presented by the Bacolod Gugma Foundation with Megaworld and Boysen Paints as co-presenters.*
