The Talisay City government in Negros Occidental is studying the possibility of developing a housing project for the fire victims of Barangay Zone 5, Mayor Neil Lizares said on Thursday, Feb. 13.

However, it may take some time to undertake the project because of the election period ban on projects, Lizares said.

Fire destroyed 57 houses in a densely populated area in Purok Pasil, Barangay Zone 5, on Feb. 4.

Lizares said the 57 families affected by the fire have received P25,000 each for a total of about P1,425,000 and food assistance.

The mayor visited the fire victims temporarily residing at the Talisay City gym on Thursday and turned over grocery packs from House Speaker Martin Romualdez and P5,000 cash assistance for each family from his family.

Talisay City Department of Social Services and Development head, Dionela Madrona, said of the P25,000 cash assistance received by each family P5,000 came from the Mayor’s family, P10,000 from the city government, P5,000 from Uswag Ilonggo Partylist and P5,000 from the barangay.

The evacuees also received rice and other food from the LGU and non – government organizations, Madrona said.

The Angels Wings Foundation headed by Talisay City First Lady Rowena ” Weng” Lizares has also deployed its Kusina Van to feed the evacuees, Madrona added.

Since the area where the fire occurred is along the shoreline the city government is also eyeing the construction of a construct seawall, Lizares said.*
