La Carlota man runs amok, killed by cop in self-defense

A man who ran amok was shot to death by a policeman in self-defense in Brgy. Batuan, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, Tuesday night, Nov. 7, the police reported.

The man, whose name was not disclosed, ran amok and destroyed a tricycle and a police patrol vehicle causing a minor injury to a policeman who shot him in self-defense, the police report said on Wednesday.

La Carlota City Police Chief, Lt. Col. Lowell Garinganao, told DIGICAST NEGROS that the suspect sustained gunshot wounds on his back and neck that caused his death.

Garinganao said that the suspect hit a tricycle with a steel pipe and tried to also strike its two passengers but they escaped.

When the police patrol vehicle arrived in the area, the suspect smashed the vehicle’s windshield next to where the policeman was sitting.

Garinganao said that as the suspect continued to strike the vehicle, the police officer was prompted to shoot him in self-defense.

The suspect was brought to the Don Salvador Benedicto Memorial District Hospital but was declared dead due to multiple gunshot wounds.

The police chief said that the Internal Affairs Service office of the Philippine National Police is investigating the incident.

The policeman might face administrative and criminal charges but that would depend on the results of the investigation conducted by IAS, he added.

The police are also investigating the motive for the incident as records show that the suspect had been previously reported for alarm scandal in the area.*
