Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson called on local officials to focus on ensuring economic growth and serving their constituents amid escalating political tension following Vice President Sara Duterte’s “death threats”.
“I call especially on the local officials to focus on your work…That will be a problem if everybody will take sides already. We should not do that, let’s just continue to work,” Lacson said on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
In an online briefing on Nov. 23, Duterte said she had already tapped an assassin to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she is assassinated first.
“The DOJ (Department of Justice) has already said that they will take these threats seriously and that they will use the law to deal with it,” Lacson said.
“The way that VP Sara spoke was very typical Duterte…I think that’s how they are when they get emotional but the threat is different, it is particularly addressed to three individuals so definitely the government will not just take this sitting down. They will go ahead and investigate and find out who was given instructions by VP Sara,” he said.
“Let’s just let the law proceed”, Lacson said, because if everybody focuses on the issue it will cause political and economic instability for the country.
The National Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday asked the vice president to give her side to investigators by Friday on her statement that she hired an assassin to kill the president, the First Lady and Romualdez.
San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, reacting to the death threats, said “I am scandalized to hear it from a Vice President, totally unbecoming and inappropriate. With all the challenges we are facing as a nation – both from within and outside of our country – this is the last thing we want from the highest leaders of our land”.
“I hope Filipino voters are learning an important lesson from this. We are now seeing the kind of leaders we have. There are so many distractions amidst so many destructions happening around us and worst within ourselves as a people”, he said.
Alminaza said he still believes God is at work and will see us through.
“Heroes and heroines are born during critical and difficult times. Let’s not lose hope,” Alminaza said.*
