Former Silay City mayor Carlo Gamban was found dead inside his room at his house in Silay City at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, the police said.
He had a bullet wound on his head when he was found by two helpers, Lt. Col. Mark Darroca, Silay City police chief, said.
The police are still investigating the incident, he said.
His wife was reportedly not at the house when the incident happened.
The mayor, who is in his 80s, had reportedly been hospitalized last week.
Silay City Mayor Joedith Gallego, who went to Gamban’s house, said he was informed that an accidental firing occurred.
He also confirmed that Gamban had a gunshot wound on his head.
“Mayor Gamban was a good mayor who was loved the people,” Gallego said.
Gallego, in a statement posted on his Facebook page, also said Gamban was more than a public servant, “he was a beacon of wisdom, humility, and dedication to our community. His leadership left an indelible mark on Silay City, and his selfless service continues to inspire us”.
Gallego said he will always cherish Gamban’s thoughtful advice and unwavering support.
“He was a mentor to many, including myself, and his guidance will remain a source of strength as we continue to strive for progress in our city,” Gallego said.
Gamban had supported Gallgeo during the last election.
Former Silay Mayor Mark Golez, in a Facebook post, said “we mourn not just the loss of a former mayor but the passing of a visionary leader, a compassionate soul, and a dear friend who left an indelible mark on Silay City. During his tenure, he did not merely lead – he inspired, uplifted, and transformed”.*
