Floods hits two cities and one town in northern Negros Occidental, and caused Boy Scouts at a jamborette in Silay City to briefly evacuate on Friday, Dec. 27.

Flooding at the 7th BSP Negros Occidental Invitational Scout Jamborette at Brgy. E. Lopez, Silay City, caused the evacuation of some of its participants Friday morning, Dec. 27, Silay Mayor Joedith Gallego said.

He said more than 3,000 scouts from all over Negros Occidental are attending the jamborette and part of the area where they pitched tents was flooded so some of them had to be transferred to the E. Lopez National High School.

The flooding started at 4 a.m. and subsided at 7 a.m. allowing the scouts to return to the camp, he added.

The jamborette started on Dec. 25 and will end on Monday, Dec. 30.

Floods also hit Victorias City and EB Magalona but the water subsided soon after.

There were 12,322 residents of 12 barangays in EB Magalona affected by the flooding but no evacuation took place, Mayor Marvin Malacon said.

The municipal government provided food assistance to the evacuees, he said.

Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez said three families evacuated in Brgy 4, Victorias City, but went home when the water subsided.

Mayor Salvador Escalante said water rose in the Sicaba River in Cadiz City but later subsided.

No flooding occurred in the city, he said.

He said a joint survey of the Department of Public Works and Highways regional and district personnel, the Cadiz City Engineer’s Office and barangay officials has been completed.

They have determined the course of action to take to mitigate flooding, he said.*
