Expected heavy ‘Inday’ rains trigger suspension of classes Friday, preemptive evacuation

Classes in Negros Oriental, Bacolod City, and several other areas in Negros Occidental have been suspended on Friday, July 10, amid expected heavy rainfall and strong winds brought on by Typhoon “Inday” and the Southwest Monsoon.

Gov. Manuel Sagarbarria issued an executive order extending the suspension of all classes in Negros Oriental until Friday.

Mayor Greg Gasataya ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in public and private schools in Bacolod City.

Schools are encouraged to shift to modular distance learning, performance tasks, and projects to ensure that learning competencies are met, he said.

Among the other areas where classes are  also suspended  on Friday are  San Carlos City, Talisay City, Silay City, Bago City, La Castellana, and Hinigaran.

There are 171 families living along or near Ibid Creek in Biaknabato, La Castellana, who evacuated Thursday as a precaution against possible lahar from Kanlaon Volcano with heavy rains expected.

Although they were not hit by ashfall following Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption Thursday morning.

Biaknabato Kagawad Allan Tomaquin said as of 2 p.m. Thursday, 463 individuals from three sitios Tamburong, Luho, and Calapnagan—had preemptively evacuated.

Those who stayed outside the evacuation center were not included in the count.

Residents in the flood-prone areas of Barangay Robles in La Castellana also preemptively evacuated.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised a yellow rainfall alert over Negros Island for Friday.

A yellow rainfall alert means that heavy rainfall  is expected and flooding is possible in low-lying areas.*
