A forecasted heat index of 40°C in Negros Occidental has prompted local government units to suspend classes on Monday, March 2, as authorities warn of potential heat-related health risks.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the forecasted heat index of 40°C necessitates the need for extreme caution.
The heat could cause possible heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Continuing activity under the heat could also lead to a heat stroke, it added.
Mayor Raymund Tongson suspended classes at all levels in public and private schools in Himamaylan City. This suspension is implemented to prioritize the health and safety of our students and school personnel, he said.
Mayor Matthew Malacon also suspended classes in E.B. Magalona on Monday due to the forecasted danger heat index level.
