Members of the Philippine National Police protecting crime syndicates will not be tolerated, PNP officials said Sunday, April 26.
Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, Police Regional Office Negros Island Region Police director, and Col. Eugene Rebadomia, Bacolod Police Director, said the police major protecting a Chinese syndicate manufacturing illegal cigarettes was not from their units.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor C. Remulla said on Friday that an active police major from Bacolod City in now under government custody and currently undergoing debriefing because investigators believe he was not acting alone.
Remulla, who did not name the police major, said he was suspected to be protecting a Chinese crime syndicate operating an illegal cigarette factory in a warehouse in Barangay Calumangan, Bago City, which was recently raided by law enforcers.
Rebadomia stressed that Remulla said the police major was from Bacolod but was not assigned to the Bacolod City Police Office.
If there was a police officer from the BCPO “engaged in such activity we would be very much open to an investigation”, he said.
Ibay said their initial investigation indicates the police major is not part of the PRO NIR.
Any such illegal activity will not be tolerated, he said.*
