Cop kills fellow policeman, jealousy eyed as motive

A Bacolod policeman was killed by an Iloilo-based cop at Camella Subdivision, Barangay Tangub, Bacolod City, at 5 p.m. Friday. May 31, a police report said.

Jealousy is being eyed as the motive for the killing, PMaj. Eugene Tolentino, Police Station 8 chief, said.

Killed was SSgt. Jotham Arrem Cañete Tuto, 31, who was assigned to the Mobile Patrol Unit of the Bacolod City Police Office and was a resident of Crossing Agustin, Barangay Paraiso, Sagay City.

The suspect   is Pat. Alvin Fernandez Rios, 26, who is assigned to the 1st Mobile Force Company of the Iloilo Provincial Police Office and a resident of Barangay Bugnay, Valderama, Antique, the police report said. 

A police report said the suspect shot the victim with his service firearm twice. The victim was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. 

The incident happened inside the bedroom of the house owned by the suspect and his former live-in partner, the police report said. 

 The suspect went to visit their   six month old son when he saw his former live-in partner and the victim in the bedroom, the police said. 

Recovered from the crime scene were a 9MM pistol, two fired cartridges, and four magazines with live ammunition. 

The suspect was immediately arrested.*
