Mayor Greg Gasataya emphasized that unity and courage helped Filipino revolutionaries win freedom and remain essential in addressing today’s challenges at the 128th Philippine Independence Day celebration in Bacolod City on Friday, June 12.

“We enjoy freedom because of the courage and unity of our ancestors,”  he said.

Gasataya added that patriotism today means serving others with honesty, compassion, and dedication to the common good, a press release from the Bacolod City Communications Office said.

Gasataya also highlighted the important role of the youth in nation-building, citing guest speaker Brianna Nikola Ang, a student leader and volleyball team captain from Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

He said her determination reflects the same spirit shown by Filipino heroes who fought for the country’s freedom.

“That relentless drive to push forward, no matter how difficult the path, extends far beyond the walls of government,” Gasataya said.

“We see that same spirit alive in our youth, reflected beautifully in our guest of honor. Brianna’s tenacity in her sport proves that raising our flag today still requires fierce discipline and an immovable heart,” he said.

The mayor noted that success is never achieved alone, emphasizing that every accomplishment is made possible through the support of families, coaches, mentors, and the wider community.

Gasataya also drew parallels between the challenges faced by past revolutionaries and those confronting Filipinos today.

“The challenges of our time look very different than the garrisons of the past, but the answer remains the same. We lock arms. We move forward as one people,” he said.

“Let us use our independence to be stronger together.”

Ang, a volleyball team captain and multi-league competitor, was chosen as guest speaker for her exemplary leadership, discipline, and perseverance, qualities that reflect modern-day patriotism and the continuing importance of unity among Filipinos.

In her message, Ang emphasized that freedom extends beyond historical struggles and is reflected in everyday acts of unity and determination.

“As a young person and athlete, I have learned that true freedom is found in unity, perseverance, and determination,” she said.

Joining Ang at the celebration was Zia Oñate, 13, a member of the championship-winning Philippine team in the FIBA U18 Women’s SEABA Qualifiers.

Recognized as the youngest player on the squad, Oñate exemplified the talent, determination, and promise of Negrense youth. City officials also shared their reflections on the significance of Independence Day.

Councilor Homer Bais said freedom was earned through sacrifice, courage, and love of country, urging citizens to uphold and protect this legacy.

Councilor Wilson Gamboa highlighted the bravery of Filipino revolutionaries and emphasized the responsibility of every generation to preserve the nation’s hard-won freedom.

Meanwhile, Councilor Em Ang said independence means ensuring that people can study, work, and live with dignity, safety, and opportunity, stressing that freedom remains a daily responsibility.

The celebration featured a flag-raising ceremony, interfaith prayer, and cultural performances. Government officials, educators, uniformed personnel, and community members gathered under the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan.”*
