Amoebiasis cases in San Carlos further increase, mayor says

The Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) cases in San Carlos City, the majority of which were amoebiasis positive, reached 205 on Friday, February 24.

The active admitted cases at the San Carlos City Hospital were 61, hospital spokesperson Charlen Pol Anlap said.

On Wednesday a 3-year-old child suffering from severe dehydration was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. It was not determined if the child was positive for amoebiasis, or had been hit by some other bacteria, she said.

The child came from Barangay Buluangan that has had the highest number of cases at 31, she said.

The San Carlos City Hospital admitted 119 amoeba positive cases and 86 AGE cases from February 1 to 24, she said.

Anlap said they also had patients who are Bureau of Jail Management and Penology inmates suffering from amoeba.

Mayor Renato Gustilo declared a state of health emergency in San Carlos City on Wednesday amid “an alarming rise in cases of amoebiasis”.

He said the City Health Office failed to immediately report the alarming number of cases and regularly inspect water sources.

It was the San Carlos City Hospital that reported the alarming rise in cases to him, not the CHO, he said, adding that more patients were admitted Friday.

“There were lapses in the operation of the City Health Office”, he said. He has directed the CHO to step up the collection of water samples for testing, Gustilo said.

Water samples from San Carlos have already been sent to Bacolod for testing to ensure the safety of residents, he said.

They are gathering data from every admitted patient on their water and food sources to help determine where the bacteria is coming from, Gustilo said.*
