Visayas grid’s red alert status for Thursday, August 13, has been extended, now from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., from the earlier 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. schedule, following the forced outages of diesel-powered generating units with capacities of around 70 megawatts (MW).
The yellow alert, meanwhile, is now from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said in an advisory.
The gap between the capacity and supply is now wider, with latest capacity pegged to be around 2,148 MW, up from 2,283 MW earlier, even as demand is now projected to peak at around 2,376 MW from 2,360 MW this morning.
NGCP said 15 power plants are on forced outage just this month alone, while more than 20 others are unavailable as far back as 2021.
It said 13 others are working on derated capacities, bringing the total loss to the grid to around 957.6 MW.
A yellow alert is issued when a grid’s operating margin is short against contingency requirement while a red alert is raised when supply is not enough to meet both the demand and regulating requirement.
The Mindanao grid remains on yellow alert from 12 noon to 8 p.m. due to a higher projected demand of around 2,652 MW, up from 2,604 MW earlier. The capacity is estimated to be around 2,752 MW, down from 2,785 MW earlier.
NGCP said 17 power plants are now on forced outage, up from 16 earlier. These are on top of the 11 that are unavailable since last year, while eight others are operating on derated capacities. Total loss to the grid is around 719.8 MW.*PNA
