Deputy House Speaker and Bacolod Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said the push to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) in November due to the current economic crisis brought on by the surge in fuel prices is gaining support.
About 95 percent of the members of the Lower House support the move and Senator Panfilo Lacson is also pushing for it in the Senate, Benitez said on Thursday, April 16.
He said when Congress resumes its sessions a multi-party push for the postponement of the BSKE is expected.
The fact that the nation is facing an emergency crisis is justifiable reason to postpone the polls, he said.
Benitez earlier said he supports postponing the BSKE for six months
The ₱13 billion to ₱14 billion currently earmarked for the elections could instead be utilized for urgent financial assistance, Benitez said.
The elections are scheduled for November 2 and any postponement would require new legislation.*
