A historical marker at the 105-year-old Yulo’s Park in Barangay 14, Bacolod City, was unveiled Thursday, August 22.

The unveiling of the historical marker from the National Museum is also part of a Department of Tourism effort for the park and six other sites in Negros Occidental to be included in a UNESCO designated sugar heritage landscape.

Yulo’s Park was built on Aug. 10, 1919, by Negros statesman Don Mariano Regalado Yulo, who was once governor of Negros Occidental and senator during the Commonwealth period.

His son, Alfredo Yulo, later served as mayor of Bacolod from May 27, 1940 to May 29, 1942.

The historical marker “is a demonstration of our commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich history of our province.” Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said.

“Historical markers serve as tangible reminders of the times that have defined the Negrense society, and they stand as testaments to the remarkable individuals, events, and places that deserve our recognition and remembrance.,” he added.

The other areas in Negros Occidental included in the bid for UNESCO World Heritage recognition are the historic center of Silay City, Hawaiian Philippines Co., Victorias Milling Co., Hacienda Santa Rosalia, Balay ni Tana Dicang and the Aniceto Lacson Mansion.

They are part of the DOT “World Heritage Bid for the Sugar Cultural Landscape of Negros and Panay Islands”.

The story of Negros Occidental is intricately linked to sugar, one cannot be thought of without the other. Lacson said.

“As we pursue this World Heritage recognition, we are not only commemorating our heritage or gaining acknowledgement from the world, but also reaffirming our dedication to safeguarding our history for present and future generations,” Lacson said.*
