Vet: Keep pets hydrated, limit outdoor activities

The Provincial Veterinary Office is urging Negrenses to ensure that their pets are hydrated and monitored to avoid the ill effects of the heat wave brought on by the El Niño phenomenon in Negros Occidental.

The PVO released a heat preparedness advisory to pet owners saying that “heat waves can pose significant risks to our furry companions”.

Among the reminders is regular hydration of pets by ensuring that they have access to plenty of fresh and clean water at all times.

“Dehydration is a significant concern during hot weather, so regularly refill water bowls and consider placing multiple water stations around your home,” PVO stated.

It also reminded the owners to create a cool and comfortable environment indoors by providing access to cool, shaded areas.

The PVO also advised to limit outdoor activities during hottest parts of the day which usually fall from late morning to early evening.

Schedule walks and playtime early in the morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

Asphalt and concrete can become extremely hot and burn your pets paws, so stick to grassy areas when outdoors, PVO added.

They also reminded to never leave the pets unattended in a parked car, even with the windows partly  open.*
