A speeding truck sideswiped a motorcycle and killed its driver and passenger along the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road at Barangay Efigenio Lizares, Talisay City, Saturday afternoon, February 13.

Killed were 55-year-old Allan Bedonia, and his nephew, 22-year-old Rodrigo Bedonia, of Hacienda San Antonio in Barangay Dos Hermanas, Talisay.

The victims, who came from a christening in Silay City, were on their way home when they were hit by a prime mover truck driven by 42-year-old Jose Kenneth Verbo.

The truck is owned by the Lopez Sugar Central Corp.

Police Master Sgt. Michael McDowell, chief investigator of the Talisay City Police Station, said the driver and a mechanic, surrendered at the police border checkpoint at Barangay Matab-ang, more than two kilometers from the scene of the accident, because they feared for their lives should the family of the victims show up.

The truck was on its way from Sagay City to the sugar central’s transloading station in Bago City, he said.

McDowell said that Allan’s eldest son met with the representatives of Lopez Sugar Central today, February 14, for a possible settlement. He added that the son will still consult with his six other siblings.

The family is still reeling from the death of their mother, Allan’s wife, a month ago.

The driver’s 18-hour reglementary period will lapse at 10 a.m. tomorrow, February 15, and he will be released from police custody should there be no charges filed.

McDowell said that the victim’s family and the company representatives will return tomorrow to continue talks on a settlement.

Based on the video taken from the dashcam of a vehicle from the opposite lane, which was sent to DIGICAST NEGROS, the truck was speeding, and that impact of the accident threw off the victims from their motorcycle.

McDowell confirmed that the prime mover truck was travelling fast.*
