The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution on Wednesday, August 28, endorsing the request of the United Negros Transport Coalition for the renewal of the franchises of traditional jeepneys to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
Bacolod Councilor Al Victor Espino said that was the ninth resolution they passed in response to the requests of traditional jeepney groups.
Lilian Sembrano, who aired the coalition’s demands before the SP, said it was big victory for them that the Sanggunian members unanimously acted on their concern.
She said they are thankful for the help of the SP.
They are also asking for the suspension of the Local Public Transport Route and the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, she said.
On Wednesday morning the coalition’s members brought their protest to the lobby of the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC).
“While we respect their right to protest, staging it inside the BCGC is not the right venue for it because they are disrupting government services”, Caesar Distrito, spokesman of Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, said.
The Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) personnel and the Bacolod City Police Office-Civil Disturbance Management team prevented the protestors from further staging their protest within the BCGC.
POSO head Primitivo Tabujara said protestors at the BCGC grounds will be required to avail of permits.*\
