The supervised harvesting of sugarcane in Brgy. Mansalanao, La Castellana, within the 6-kilometer danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano has been allowed, the Office of Civil Defense said on Sunday, Jan. 19.
The Regional Incident Management Team has joined forces with the IMT of La Castellana, Negros Occidental, to oversee the harvesting activities of sugarcane farmers in Brgy. Mansalanao, the OCD said.
Task Force Kanlaon has allowed the supervised farming activities in the danger zone between 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., it said.
This aims to balance the safety of evacuees with the need to sustain their livelihoods, particularly during the harvest season, the OCD explained.
Strict monitoring and coordination are in place to ensure the safety of farmers while they conduct their activities, it said.
Meanwhile, Task Force Kanlaon conducted site development planning at the Tent City site at Brgy. 3, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
The tent city will serve as the relocation site for evacuees from La Castellana in the event of an escalation in Kanlaon Volcano’s alert status, the OCD said.*
