Soldier injured in encounter, 653 evacuate in Toboso

A soldier was injured in an encounter with remnants of the New People’s Army in Sitio Sinugmawan, Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental on Sunday, April 19, An Army official said. The soldier sustained a minor injury in the hand when 79th Infantry Battalion troops encountered the rebels at 4 a.m., Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, 303rd Infantry Brigade (303IB), said.

The rebels are led by Arnel Tapang, also known by the aliases “Jhong,” “Nono,” and “Roger Fabillar”, he said.

Pursuit operations were ongoing Sunday night.

Mayor Richard Jaojoco said 653 residents have evacuated in barangays Salamanca and San Jose, Toboso, on Sunday.

“Let’s keep praying for peace and protection amid the ongoing armed conflict,” he said.

The 15th Infantry Battalion troops also encountered remnants of the dismantled Southwest Front Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros at So. Lomboy, Brgy. Caliling, Cauayan, Negros Occidental on April 18. *
