A 62nd Infantry Battalion soldier sustained minor injuries in an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Brgy. Humay-humay, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, Thursday morning, May 1.
Lt. Col. Evelio Ilanga, III, 62nd IB commander, said the initial clash occurred around 6 a.m. in Barangay Humay-humay, where soldiers encountered about nine remnants of the dismantled Central Negros 1 (CN1) guerrilla front.
The rebels opened fire on the government troops using an M-203 grenade launcher, hitting the leg of a soldier with shrapnel.
A three-minute firefight took place before the rebels retreated and pursuit operations led to two more brief skirmishes with the same group, Ilanga added.
The soldiers recovered one high-powered firearm, ammunition, magazines, and personal belongings at the encounter site.*
