A Sangguniang Kabataan kagawad was arrested after a man was killed during a fight in a remote community in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, late Tuesday night, July 21.

The incident happened at around 11:30 p.m. in Sitio Binanigan, Brgy. Ilaya, the Calatrava police reported.

The police identified the suspect as “Michael”, 22, an SK kagawad and a Brgy. Ilaya resident.

Investigation showed that the suspect and the victim, identified as “Rodrigo”, had been drinking with several neighbors near the suspect’s house.

Police said the victim allegedly attempted to force his way into the house after the drinking session and repeatedly threw stones when the suspect ignored him.

The suspect went outside to stop the victim, resulting in a fistfight between them, investigators said.

The suspect later allegedly picked up a stone and struck the victim on the head, inflicting an injury believed to have caused his death, they added.

The incident was reported to police at around 4 a.m. Wednesday by the barangay captain and several barangay tanods.

Responding personnel had difficulty reaching the area because continuous heavy rainfall had left the terrain muddy, rough and inaccessible to conventional vehicles.

Police coordinated with barangay officials and community volunteers to retrieve the victim’s body and transport it to the Calatrava Municipal Hospital for medico-legal examination.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to responding officers and is now under police custody pending the filing of appropriate charges.*
