Sensory-friendly movie lights up Autism Week

Some 358 participants – kids on the autism spectrum and their families, disability leaders, Bacolod City government representatives, and advocacy volunteers of SM City Bacolod – joined in the nationwide celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week by watching the sensory-friendly Filipino film, Firefly, on Friday, Jan. 17.

Dubbed “Lights Up, Sounds Down,” this movie experience was unique for the audience because of adjustments SM made to the lighting and sound to minimize sensory overload.

Additionally, the relaxed atmosphere allowed for movement and vocalizations, making the experience more enjoyable and less restrictive.

Noting that many individuals with autism have not been inside a cinema or fully enjoyed the experience, May Castro, the public relations manager of SM City Bacolod said, “We have put great thought into making the experience safe and inclusive for those with sensory challenges.”

Through the Lights Up, Sounds Down project, SM Supermalls fosters a welcoming atmosphere in the theater, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to share in the joy of watching movies, she said.

The participating kids were mostly members of the Autism Society Philippines, one of SM Supermalls’ strong partners in the mall chain’s efforts for accessibility, awareness and the creation of safe spaces.

Wendy Arroyo, president of the local chapter, expressed her thanks for including Bacolod as one of the ten sites identified for this special movie screening.

“In behalf of the parents and advocates who tirelessly raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), we are thankful to SM for the unwavering commitment to building an Autism-OK Philippines—where acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation for individuals on the autism spectrum are the norm”, she said.

The movie Firefly by GMA Pictures was selected for its gentle and visually enchanting narrative that emphasizes themes of love, imagination, and resilience. This heartwarming Filipino fantasy film directed by Zig Madamba Dulay won Best Picture at the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Lights Up, Sounds Down is a partnership of SM Supermalls and SM Cares with the Autism Society Philippines, GMA Pictures and SM Cinema.*PR
