Sagaynon Ulirang Nakakatanda 2022 national awardee

Sagay City lauded a former Brgy. Andres Bonifacio captain for his recognition as one of the Sampung Ulirang Nakakatanda Awardees for 2022 in the Philippines during the city flag ceremony at the Sagay City Government Center on Monday, October 3.

Mayor Narciso “Narwin” Javelosa Jr., together with the president of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines-Sagay Chapter president, John H. Espeso, recognized Exequiel Cañete during the program, in time with the Elderly Week celebration.

He received a trophy and cash prize of P20,000.

Cañete was an outstanding leader for his contribution to the development of his community such as the electrification system of Barangay Andres Bonifacio of which he used to be a Punong Barangay, a press release from Sagay City said.

Javelosa said Canete’s “exemplary deeds are worthy to be emulated.”

He spearheaded the enactment in the Local Government Unit of the Nonagenarian Act, which awards P50,000 to the elderly who have reached the age of 90 years old and above when he started as president of Senior Citizens in Barangay Andres Bonifacio.

He has also played a big role in the enactment into law of additional benefits for centenarians at the Local and Provincial Levels.

Cañete, or “Tatay Iking”, is 94 years old and still actively participates in all the activities of the senior citizens and in his community.

The Sampung Ulirang Nakakatanda Award is an award by the Coalition of Senior Citizens in the country.

Meanwhile, the awards that Sagay City received recently were also presented and best performances of the corresponding sections were recognized.

Sagay City LGU is one of the awardees of the PRIME – HRM Bronze Award given by the Civil Service Commission during the agency’s “Pasidungog Award in Iloilo City.

The award was received by Javelosa, HRMO head Rena Dy, and SP Member Felisa de la Cruz.

Sagay City was also included in the world’s Green Destinations Top 100 Stories 2022 List during the Green Destinations and Future of Tourism Summit in Athens Greece.
