The 19th year of “Adlaw sang Kabata-an”, a day when the children of Sagay City in Negros Occidental play traditional Filipino games and make crafts, was held on Monday, March 11.
The Museo Sang Bata sa Negros in Sagay City believes that despite being in the 21st century and in the age of modernism and technology, our traditional games like piko, sungka, dama, kadang and the sack race should never be forgotten, museum director Lilibeth Cordova said.
“They are just as enjoyable if not more, than playing virtual games”, she said.
Traditional “Lukay” weaving also took center stage when the children wove various objects using coconut leaves, she said.
These creations can also be used for Palm Sunday.
Cordova said 315 children from 31 Sagay schools participated with 141 teacher facilitators.
Prizes were given to the winners and tokens to the facilitators.
Cordova thanked the Office of Vice Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva that spearheaded the games and Sagay DepEd Mapeh officer Rene Encabo who gave a short message before the games.
She also thanked the Office of Mayor Narciso Javelosa for supporting the games.*
