RMCI achieves milestone with 1st successful coronary artery bypass surgery in Negros

Riverside Medical Center Inc. announced on Tuesday, June 20, a medical milestone with the successful completion of the first Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) in Negros.

The groundbreaking procedure was performed by a team of highly skilled doctors in the Philippines on June 3.

Dr. Michael Cabalatungan, Dr. Calvin Fernandez, Dr Grace Manganti, Dr. George Masa, and Dr. Christian Tortosa, assisted by surgical and medical experts from Manila and Iloilo City conducted the successful surgery.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery is an intricate procedure that restores blood flow to the heart by bypassing blocked or narrowed coronary arteries.

“This remarkable achievement marks a major breakthrough in cardiovascular care within Negros, providing new hope and advance treatment options for patients suffering from coronary artery disease,” an RMCI statement said.

The patient, a 58-year-old resident of Brgy. Ma-ao, Bago City, had been experiencing progressive symptoms of coronary artery disease for the past 6 months, which significantly impacted on her quality of life. With the CABG procedure performed at RMCI, the patient’s life has been positively transformed.

She is now on the path to recovery with an enhanced outlook on life, the statement said.

“The success of the first CABG in Negros Occidental is a testament to the expertise and dedication of the medical professionals at the Riverside Medical Center Heart Care Center.
