Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Friday, June 23, that despite the pig deaths in 17 out of 31 towns and cities in Negros Occidental from either hog cholera or African swine fever the province was able to ship out more than 5,000 pigs for sale in Luzon and Mindanao.
Shipped out from June 1 to 16 were 4,322 pigs for Luzon and 1,454 for the Visayas or a total of 5,776 heads, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said.
The total pig deaths in Negros Occidental were 14,014 or 9.79 percent of the province’s hog population on Thursday, the Provincial Veterinary Office reported.
Total losses to the hog industry reached P157,658,100 affecting 2,769 hog raisers in 142 barangays of Negros Occidental, the PVO added.
The governor noted that the number of daily pig deaths in Negros Occidental have dropped to above 100 from a high or more than 400.*
