Negros pig deaths in 144 brgys in 18 LGUs not enough for state of emergency: guv

The provincial Emergency Management Team is continuing to disinfect pigpens to prevent the spread of hog diseases.*

A lot more barangays in Negros Occidental would have to be hit by pig deaths before a state of emergency can be declared, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Tuesday, June 27.

In fact somehow the situation has been contained with the daily pig deaths having decreased, he said.

Pig deaths from various diseases have hit 144 barangays in 18 local government units in Negros Occidental, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) reported Tuesday, June 27.

Negros Occidental pig deaths were at 14,738 or 9.74 percent of the province’s hog population, the PVO said.

This has affected 2,967 pig raisers with P166,176,800 in losses as of Tuesday, the PVO added.

The latest barangay to be hit by pig deaths is Cansalongon in Isabela town, the PVO said.

The following areas have been hit by pig deaths: Manapla and Cadiz in the first district, Silay City, EB Magalona, Talisay City and Murcia in the second district, San Enrique, Valladolid, Pulupandan, Pontevedra, Bago City and La Carlota City in the fourth district, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Himamaylan City and Isabela in the fifth district, and Ilog and Kabankalan in the sixth district.

Lacson said he is not encouraging the repopulation of pigs until the spread of the diseases is fully contained.*
