Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Tuesday, October 18, that there is no need to declare a provincewide cholera outbreak since the 12 positive cases and two deaths from the water-borne disease are concentrated in the 3rd District of Negros Occidental only.
The affected local government units are doing their best to control the situation, and are focusing on ensuring that the water in their refilling stations are safe, he said.
Rep. Francisco Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said all the affected local government units have already started surveying and testing water sources.
Silay City had five confirmed cholera cases with one death, EB Magalona – four cases with one death, Talisay City – two cases and Victorias City – one case, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Negros Occidental provincial health officer, said on Monday.
Mayor Marvin Malacon declared cholera outbreaks in barangays Batea, 3 (Poblacion), and Tanza in EB Magalona where cholera positive cases were detected.
Mayor Judith Gallego said instead of declaring outbreaks in Silay City a Cholera Task Force has been created ensure that the city’s water is safe.
The task force is inspecting and testing water sources and conducting an information drive against cholera, he said.
Water refilling stations with no business permits will be closed if they do not comply with the city’s requirements, and those operating are required to have their water tested every month, Gallego said.*
