NegOcc schools’ water sources have been checked, officials say

The Negros Occidental Schools Division has already implemented measures to prevent water and food-borne diseases in its schools following the rise in cholera cases, especially in the third District of the province.

EB Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon, Silay Mayor Joedith Gallego and City Administrator Jonathan Ealdama of Talisay City also said on Sunday that their City Health Office personnel have also inspected school water sources and food sold nearby.

Gallego said food vendors near schools in Silay City need permits to operate.

The Department of Education 6 Regional Director Ramir Uytico said on Friday that he has directed the 21 schools’ divisions in Western Visayas to check their schools’ water systems to ensure their safety.

The divisions should check their water source, water tanks, and faucets, especially hand-washing areas, Uytico said, adding that learners and teachers should not use the water in schools for drinking.

Ian Arnold Arnaez, Negros Occidental Schools Division spokesperson, said Dr. Joey Villarosa, their medical officer, informed him that cholera precautions have already been incorporated in the division’s procedures for School Based Management of Water Sanitation and Hygiene.

In elementary and secondary schools all school canteen personnel and operators must also have the necessary sanitation permits and health cards, he added.

The DepEd water and food sanitation drive is in coordination with the local government units, Arnaez said.*
