NegOcc dengue cases in January up 296% with two deaths – PHO

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental increased by 296.83 percent in the first 18 days of 2025, with two dengue related deaths recorded, the Provincial Health Office reported on Friday, Jan. 24.

Dr. Ma. Girlie Pinongan, Provincial Health Officer, said there were 250 reported dengue cases from Jan 1 to 18, an increase by 187 cases compared to 63 cases in the same period last year.

The dengue related deaths in January were two, she also said.

The age group with the most number of dengue cases were from 11 to 20 years old.

Bago City continued to have the highest number of dengue cases in January at 58, followed by San Carlos City with 20 cases, Kabankalan City – 19, Pulupandan – 15, Silay City – 13, Valladolid – 11 and La Carlota City – 10.

In 2024 Negros Occidental had 6,799 dengue cases, which were 354.48 percent more than in 2023, Pinongan reported.

There were also 22 dengue related deaths in 2024.

Bago City had the most number of dengue cases in 2024 at 1,042.

No dengue related deaths were reported in Bacolod City in January this year.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

The Department of Health urges the public to follow the 4S campaign to prevent   the spread of dengue.

The 4S stands for “Search and Destroy” mosquito breeding places, “Secure Self Protection” from mosquito bite, “Seek Early Consultation” when signs and symptoms of dengue occur, and “Say Yes to Fogging” as a last resort when there is an impending outbreak.*
