NBI warns vs. AI App

The National Bureau of Investigation-Western Visayas is warning the public to be cautious about using an application that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) as it can be maliciously exploited leading to identity theft, data breaching, and phishing.

An NBI public advisory cautioned the public, particularly against using a digital application that requires the users to submit 10 personal photos to generate an enhanced portrait using AI.

“It is of paramount importance to recognize that this seemingly harmless and entertaining AI-powered application comes with major privacy and security risks,” the NBI said.

The agency said that AI-driven technology has the potential to be exploited, which can be used to craft fake profiles that can be used for incidents of identity theft, data breaching, sexual exploitation, phishing attacks, ransomware attacks, and other malicious activities.

The NBI said it has already received reports on such cases.

“We strongly advise the public to exercise caution when considering the use of AI photo generator applications,” they said, adding “It is crucial to ensure that your online actions align with the values of responsible online behavior and adhere to existing policies.”

The public was also advised to protect their personal information and ensure safety in the digital space.*
