Man hacked dead, brother arrested

A 56-year-old laborer was allegedly hacked to death by his brother in Purok Detachment, Sitio Mambato, Brgy. To-oy, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday night, Jan. 27.

The police said the victim was a male resident of Brgy. To-oy, while the suspect was identified as alias “Roge,” 50, the victim’s younger brother, who was later arrested by responding police officers.

The Himamaylan City Police Station reported that the incident happened at around 8:30 p.m. following a heated argument inside the victim’s residence between the victim and his live-in partner.

Police said the suspect, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, began shouting invectives outside the house and repeatedly struck the door, prompting the victim to confront him while holding a piece of wood.

The suspect allegedly went home and returned armed with a sugarcane cutter, while the victim struck him with the piece of wood, triggering a violent confrontation.

Authorities said the suspect retaliated by hacking the victim several times, hitting him in the head, neck, and other parts of the body before fleeing the scene.

The victim was rushed by Himamaylan rescuers to the Governor Valeriano M. Gatuslao Hospital but was declared dead by the attending physician.

A hot pursuit operation led to the arrest of the suspect, who was positively identified by witnesses.

The police said the suspect is now detained at the Himamaylan City Police Station.*
