Negros Occidental Board Member Valentino Miguel “Macho” Alonso confirmed on Tuesday, August 13, that he intends to run for mayor of Kabankalan City.

“I have expressed my intent to run for mayor, that’s very clear”, he said.

Alonso said he already has a runningmate but refused to name the person for now.

Kabankalan Mayor Benjie Miranda has announced that he is seeking reelection, while former mayor Isidro Zayco is rumored to be planning to make a comeback.

Zayco, who is also former governor of Negros Occidental, is the provincial chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Alonso is a member of the United Negros Alliance and NPC.

If Zayco, who is his uncle, runs for mayor he has seniority over him in the NPC, Alonso said.

“If he (Zayco) gets the party nod I will not be an NPC candidate,” Alonso said.

It is not known yet if the UNegA will back Alonso’s bid for mayor.

UNegA is set to hold its general assembly next week.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said he will discuss with Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez when Love Negros will hold its general assembly.

Lacson said all the Love Negros candidates for mayor are in place already.

Talisay Mayor Neil Lizares is on his third and last term and will field his wife, Rowena, to run for mayor, Lacson said.

In Kabankalan they will wait until decisions are made on who are running for mayor, Lacson said.*
