Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson met with Australian officials on Tuesday, May 27, to strengthen regional ties between Negros Occidental and Australia’s Northern Territory, especially in areas of education and trade.

Lacson, who is in the Northern Territory to attend the graduation of Negrense scholars under the Negros Occidental Scholarship Program (NOSP), met with Robyn Cahill, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations; International Education, Migration and Population; Workforce Development; Advanced Manufacturing; Children and Families; Child Protection; and Prevention of Domestic Violence.

Lacson and Cahill discussed the strengthening of regional ties between Negros Occidental and the Northern Territory, particularly in areas of international education, skills development, trade, and cultural exchange, including the possibility of the resumption of direct flights from Manila to Darwin.

Also present at the meeting was Kelly Ralston, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Territory’s Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations.

Joining Lacson were Philippine Honorary Consul General to the Northern Territory Januario Rivas, Provincial Administrator Ray Diaz II, NOSP Head Karen Dinsay, and Provincial Public Information Officer and Executive Assistant to the Governor Charina Magallanes-Tan.

Lacson reiterated Negros Occidental’s commitment to building strategic global linkages that open opportunities for Negrenses and contribute to the province’s human capital development.

The visit highlights the successful collaboration between Negros Occidental and the Northern Territory in education programs that are already transforming lives of the Negrense youth, Magallanes-Tan said.

The governor’s presence at the graduation of the Negrense scholars is a testament to the provincial government’s strong support for its students abroad and its vision of producing globally competitive and socially responsible Negrense professionals, she said.*
