Kanlaon Volcano that is continuing to degas spewed grey ash again on Wednesday, Nov. 6, that landed in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

The volcano also had 10 volcanic earthquakes and emitted 2,066 tons of sulfur dioxide, Mari-Andylene Quintia, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology resident volcanologist at the Mt. Kanlaon Observatory, said.

Although the volcano’s sulfur dioxide emission has decreased, it is still way above the 300 tons per day baseline, she said.

A thin layer of grey ash from the volcano landed at Sitio Upper Pantao, Barangay Pula, in Canlaon City, Wednesday morning, she said.

“Ash fall is a hazard that can cause lung and heart diseases, residents in affected areas should wear masks,” she reiterated.

John de Asis, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer, said thin ash fall was also reported in barangays Cabacungan, Cabagna-an and Biak na Bato in La Castellana in Negros Occidental on Tuesday.

The smell of sulfur from the volcano was also reported, he said.

On Wednesday the wind direction was to the east causing the ash to fall in Canlaon, he said.

The Negros Occidental provincial government preparations for a possible Kanlaon Volcano eruption are also being put in place, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said.

They are finalizing the prepositioning of government assets for deployment, he said.

Twenty additional ambulances will be prepositioned that will be manned by the provincial Emergency Response Team, he said.

They had to procure the ambulances and train the drivers that are now ready, Diaz said. The ambulances will also be ready to respond to vehicular accidents, he added.

The provincial government has also acquired a third bus for emergency evacuations, he added.*
