‘It’s premature for Comelec to act on withdrawn Cha-cha signatures’

Those who wish to withdraw their signatures in support of the people’s initiative to amend the 1987 Constitution are free to do so, Negros Occidental Provincial Elections Supervisor, Ian Lee Ananoria, said Tuesday, January 23.

However, it would be premature for the Comelec to act on the submitted withdrawn signatures now as they have not been directed to validate those in support of the people’s initiative yet, he said.

So far 211,000 signatures from Bacolod City and Negros Occidental in support of the people’s initiative to amend the Constitution have been submitted to the COMELEC, he said, with more still expected.

“Once the proponents file a petition for Charter Change I think there will be an order for us to verify the signatures they have submitted,” Ananoria said.

“We are waiting for a Comelec en banc order to validate the signatures”, Ananoria said.

Lawyer Cesar Beloria on Monday, January 22, said he has a launched a signature drive in Bacolod City for those who wish to withdraw their support for the people’s initiative because they did not understand what they signed.

His campaign will start this week, he said.*
